Lewes art panel to meet June 25

The Lewes Public Art Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, at the Rollins Center.

Lewes BPW to meet June 25

The Lewes Board of Public Works will hold its monthly meeting at 4 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, at city hall.

Lewes Mayor and City Council will hold a public workshop at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 26, at city hall.

The agenda includes discussion of the proposed pilot for a residential mobility-based parking program.

RD 20 Democrats to meet June 26

The Delaware 20th Representative District Democratic Committee will meet in a new location at 6 p.m., Thursday, June 26, at the Rose & Crown restaurant inside Hotel Rodney, 142 Second St., Lewes. 

An informal social gathering for Dutch treat dinner starts at 5 p.m.

Following a short meeting, Mitch Crane will discuss key roles committee people play in their election districts and in local elections. Crane is a former Sussex County Democratic Committee chair, a retired judge and an adjunct professor for the master of public administration degree program at Delaware State University.

RD20 is the local Democratic Party organization for residents in Lewes, Milton, Nassau, Pinetown, Belltown, and sections of Harbeson and Georgetown. Any registered Democrat in Delaware is welcome to participate in RD20’s social hour and business meeting. Meeting dates will return to the third Thursday of the month, July 17.

Special Rehoboth meeting June 26

The Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission will hold a special meeting at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, June 26, at city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. 

The agenda calls for a preliminary review of a major subdivision for Ocean Reserve, a development project on 7.75 acres off Coastal Highway to include 31 single-family home lots. Also on the agenda is a site-plan public hearing for the 105-room version of the Belhaven Hotel.

Free financial literacy workshop registration due June 27

Sussex County Habitat for Humanity is partnering with the Community Resource Center to offer a free financial literacy workshop designed to help local residents take control of their financial future.

The session will meet from 6 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 30, at CRC, 37510 Oyster House Road, Rehoboth Beach.

Financial coach Paula Puello will provide expert tips on managing debt, building healthy financial habits and setting goals for long-term success.

Financial stability is a key part of Sussex Habitat’s mission to build strength, stability and self-reliance through housing and community support. The workshop is open to anyone, whether they are working toward homeownership or simply looking to improve their financial wellness.

Rehoboth planning meeting set June 27

The Rehoboth Beach Planning Commission will meet at 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 27, at city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for a public hearing on the site plan for a 10-room addition at Coast Hotel, 123 Second St. 

It also includes a continuation of a preliminary site-plan review for the Atlantic Crowne Hotel, a proposed 55-room, four-story hotel on Baltimore Avenue. 

Finally, the agenda calls for a preliminary review of a lot partitioning at 1001 Scarborough Ave. Ext. As proposed, one lot would be 13,947 square feet and one would be 5,659 square feet.

Turning Point Yoga to host free meditation June 27

A free meditation program will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, June 27, at Turning Point Yoga & Meditation in Milton.

Those who attend will experience deep meditation made easily accessible by one who has devoted her life to spirituality. Swami Shrutananda will share her incredible knowledge in a personal way through humor as well as her caring presence. Her satsang program includes a discourse as well as group chant and meditation. She makes the approach easy for newcomers. Attendees can allow her to show the truth of the highest teachings, as she guides them to the experience of their own divine essence.

Free Yoga Pain Clinic set in Rehoboth June 28

A free Yoga Pain Clinic will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday June 28, at Rehoboth Beach Yoga. Anyone who lives with pain and is looking for an alternative way to manage it can learn how to live a pain‐free life with Svaroopa yoga. Participants will find out how yoga can help relieve aches and pains, learn what is going on from yoga's perspective and experience a few body‐friendly yoga poses selected specifically for those who attend. No previous experience is necessary. Attendees should wear comfortable clothes that allow them to bend and stretch.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority gala fundraiser set June 28

The Sussex County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will host A Night of Elegance in White from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, June 28, at Cambria Hotel, 17222 Hood Road, Rehoboth Beach. The event will raise funds for the chapter’s scholarship program and community service support throughout Sussex County. Route 24 Alliance meeting set June 29

The Route 24 Alliance will hold a public meeting from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Sunday, June 29, at Delaware State Police Troop 7, 19444 Mulberry Knoll Road, Lewes, about the proposed rezoning of the Belle Mead property from agricultural/residential to a commercial/residential use.

The Belle Mead horse farm is adjacent to Beacon Middle School on Route 24. The proposed development would include a mix of rental units and retail shopping.

Meeting organizers plan to discuss ideas to present during a Sussex County Council hearing set for Tuesday, July 22, including making a list of requests if the development is approved.

Dine-and-donate to benefit Rehoboth fire company July 2

To raise funds for the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats will host a Beer and Benevolence night from 4 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, at 320 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. A 10% portion of sales proceeds will be donated to purchase protective gear for the fire company, which serves a full-time population of 30,000 people and a seasonal population of more than 300,000. Redmond named to Delaware Tech board of trustees

Delaware Technical Community College announced Dr. Michael D. Redmond has been nominated by Gov. Matt Meyer and confirmed by the Delaware Senate to serve a three-year term on the board of trustees.

Redmond most recently served as president of Bergen Community College in New Jersey, a position he held until his retirement in 2020.

“Dr. Redmond brings to Delaware Tech more than 30 years of experience working in various community college leadership roles,” said Nancy Shevock, board chair. “We look forward to his contributions to our board of trustees as we focus on the college’s mission to put students at the center of everything we do while responding to workforce and community needs.”

Redmond holds a bachelor of biblical studies degree from Northeastern Bible College, a master of arts in philosophy from Rutgers University, and a doctorate in theological and religious studies. A resident of Sussex County, he is a member of the Rehoboth Beach Kiwanis Club and a readers theater group, the Spoken Word Society, sponsored by the Lewes Public Library.

Redmond will fill the seat held by Lolita Lopez, who has served for nine years.
