Charles B. Stevenson III, veteran, proud family man

June 26, 2025

Charles B. Stevenson III, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 24, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Sally (Jester) Stevenson, sharing 34 wonderful years of marriage. Born May 7, 1937, at home in Georgetown, he was the son of the late Charles B. Stevenson Jr. and Myrtle (Willey) Stevenson. Charles graduated from Georgetown High School in 1955 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy that August. He proudly served his country and was honorably discharged in 1959. Charles was a proud sailor and maintained strong relationships with shipmates.

Following his service, he was employed at the DuPont plant in Seaford, retiring in July 1971. Charles began his long and dedicated career with the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office. He grew through the ranks with his distinguished personality, strong work ethic and always striving for more. While working as the state fire marshal, Charles earned his associate's degree in criminal justice. After 28 dedicated years, he retired as chief deputy fire marshal for Kent and Sussex counties. Following retirement, Charles worked part time for Hertrich Ford. Beginning in 1979 and lasting 44 years, Charles was a seasonal employee at Dover Motor Speedway. He formed many lasting relationships and will be remembered for his expertise and guidance with new projects or enjoying an age-old NASCAR race. Charles was a lifelong member of Georgetown Fire Company, Station 77, and served as past president. In April 2025, he was honored for 61 years of dedicated service. In addition to his fire company service, he worked at Milford Police Department as a volunteer and was a member of Carlisle Fire Company in Milford.

In his spare time, Charles and Sally enjoyed their slice of paradise in Lakeland, Fla. He leaves behind many memories of eating strawberry shortcake, fried pickles and a warm cup of coffee watching the peaceful water. Charles also enjoyed traveling on cruises and visiting all parts of the world. His favorite trip was a tie between Key West and Yellowstone National Park. Charles was a proud family man, never missing a celebration or a birthday phone call. He could tell you all of his family members’ birthdays and their biggest accomplishments. He took great pride in his flower gardens and truly enjoyed his beautiful blooms.

In addition to his wife, Sally, he is survived by his sons, Charles B. Stevenson IV (Tina) and Jeffrey Stevenson; Sally's children, Ellen and Rob (Erin); grandchildren who affectionately called him "Poppy," Kristine (Marc), Charles V "Stevie" (Andrea), Elizabeth (Bradley), Lynsey (Dustin), Mackenzie (Joseph) and Michaela; brother, James (Brenda); seven great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews.
