Andrew Lyter to lead Lewes Maritime Museum transformation

July 10, 2025

The Historic Lewes board of trustees announced Executive Director Andrew Lyter will assume responsibility for the transformation of the Lewes History Museum into the Lewes Maritime Museum.

As curator of maritime history and director of external affairs, Lyter will lead the team to research, design and curate the new theater and exhibition space at the museum. He will also continue to serve as the public face of Historic Lewes (formerly the Lewes Historical Society), collaborating with community organizations and other museum partners.

“As a maritime historian, the prospect of curating Lewes' future maritime museum is an opportunity that I cannot pass up. Transitioning to this new role was a difficult decision for me to make, but I am continually inspired by Lewes' rich maritime past and ecstatic for the opportunity to take the helm of this immense project,” said Lyter.

Operational management of the Historic Lewes campus on Shipcarpenter Street will be taken on by Interim Director of Operations Tri McCarthy, who will handle programs, education, events and financial oversight.

“Having started with Historic Lewes six years ago, I am excited to continue working together with my colleagues and our awesome volunteer community, enhancing the mission’s vision and growth,” said McCarthy.

Historic Lewes Board Chair Denise Clemons said, ”We are excited to have Andrew fully focused on the Maritime History Museum. His expertise and passion for the subject, and his dedication to Historic Lewes make this the perfect role for him.”
