District 3 all-stars move to 3-0 in Senior Softball World Series
It took an extra inning but the Delaware District 3 all-stars put a tough Southwest team in the books with a 7-3 win July 29 at Lyons Field in Roxana.
Jordynn Bowe (Cape Henlopen) put the Delaware squad on the scoreboard first with an RBI single in the first inning. Southwest tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, and the intense battle was on.
District 3’s Adeline Lutz (Sussex Central) drove in a run in the top of the fourth to take the 2-1 lead, but Southwest took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring runs on a sacrifice and a single, to go ahead 3-2.
Delaware tied the game at 3-3 with a sac fly from Lutz, who went 2-for-4 in the game.
The extra inning found the Delaware team showing its grit, as Cierra Lewis (Sussex Tech) scored the eventual game-winning run. With a cool and calm attitude, Taylor Lowe (Delmarva Christian) came to the plate and sent an 0-2 pitch downtown for a three-run insurance policy.
Lewis went the distance in the circle, allowing just three hits and three unearned runs. She struck out four batters.
“We had some things go our way,” said Delaware manager Clint Lutz. “They made a couple of errors, and we took advantage of them. We have great hitting. One through nine can hit the ball. We don’t live by the long ball. We like to play small ball too. But we also like to mix it up.”
Lowe bashed her second homer in as many games in the fourth inning of District 3’s 4-3 win over Latin America July 30 at Layton Field. Kimora Harris (Sussex Central) singled and garnered an RBI, going 1-for-3 in the game..
Lewis handled Latin America in the circle for six innings, giving up three runs (two earned), while striking out five and walking three. Makenna Blades (Sussex Academy) came in from the bullpen to finish off the game with a clean slate in the seventh.
Mariah McCabe (Sussex Tech) and Ava Brock (Sussex Central) each delivered for District 3 with two hits. Bowe went 1-for-3. Karly Kruger (Sussex Central) slammed a double.
District 3 is set to face-off against undefeated Asia-Pacific of the Philippines in the final game of pool play at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 31. Both teams have already earned a spot in the knockout round, which begins Friday, Aug. 1. The championship game will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 3.
