Barbara Jessen, Beebe retiree
Barbara "Babs" Jessen, 83, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Berry and Grace Smith.
Babs spent her younger years in Chestertown, Md., Love Creek, and Millsboro before graduating from Millsboro High School Class of 1959.
She began nurses’ training at Beebe Hospital but paused her studies after marrying Joseph E. Lofland II. They moved to Georgetown and had two children, Keith Jessen and Karen Lofland (Lisa). She later married George Jessen (deceased).
Babs spent most of her career working in the healthcare industry and retired from Beebe Hospital after 27 years of service. After retiring, she worked in retail at Newport News and Walmart until retiring again at 67.
Known for her fiery spirit and generous heart, Babs had a lifelong love for animals. She cared for many dogs over the years, including poodles, Doberman pinschers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, and rescue dogs, with Ziggy being her most cherished companion. She found great joy in gardening, landscaping, sewing, and refinishing furniture, and was always eager to help anyone in need.
She is survived by her sisters, Constance Baker of West Virginia and Susan Jones (Keith) of Maine; her son, Keith Jessen of Laurel; daughter, Karen Lofland (Lisa) of Hampton, Va.; and her beloved Ziggy.
A private graveside service will be held at Millsboro Cemetery.
