DelDOT to host 5K run Sept. 13 with new Millsboro bypass as race course

Proceeds to support childhood cancer patients, families and research
August 20, 2025

Ahead of the opening of the new North Millsboro Bypass to vehicle traffic, the Delaware Department of Transportation will host a charity 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 13. Online registration is now open at tinyurl.com/4nhwmjrf.

All proceeds from the race will benefit the B+ Foundation, which supports children with cancer and their families, as well as funding research to find cures for childhood cancers. The organization was created in honor of Wilmington resident Andrew McDonough, who lost his life to acute myeloid leukemia in 2007.

“The idea of a bypass road around Millsboro has been discussed for decades, and with the opening nearing, this is a great opportunity for the community to see the road up close and support a cause that has recently helped support a DelDOT family during their child’s cancer treatment, and thousands of others,” said DelDOT Secretary Shanté Hastings.

Bicyclists will also be able to ride on the new road at the conclusion of the 5K event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Attendees will enter the bypass via the new exit ramp from Route 30/Gravel Hill Road, located a half-mile north of the Route 30-Route 24 intersection. Cars will be parked along the new bypass, with runners starting at the new Hollyville Road and Route 24 bypass intersection and going to the bridge over Fox Run Road and back.

The North Millsboro Bypass is expected to open to traffic in late September. The project, which began in March 2023, includes a two-lane, 2.8-mile connector road between Route 113 and Route 24 north of Millsboro, and a separated multiuse trail. The new alignment starts at Route 113 and extends eastward, bridging over Fox Run Road, Norfolk Southern Railroad, Millsboro Pond and Gravel Hill Road, and connecting to Route 24 west of Mountaire Farms.
