Blue Hen Beach Classic

The University of Delaware Athletics Department is holding the inaugural Blue Hen Beach Classic golf fundraiser at Rehoboth Beach Country Club Tuesday, Sept. 30. The proceeds support the university’s student-athletes.

The event begins with an 11 a.m. lunch followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. After-round festivities include a reception and dinner at the clubhouse, with awards, cocktails and dinner.

The individual entry fee is $750, with the base foursome fee set at $3,000. Sponsorship opportunities run from $4,000 to $15,000, all of which include either one or two foursomes depending on which sponsorship option is selected. Swag sponsorships are also available for $3,000.

Roostas

Sometimes you see a product line at the PGA Show that immediately says, “This needs to be in the Cape Region.”

I had that thought when I met Trent and Ashley Cox, founders and co-owners of Roostas (shoproostas.com).

The Oxford, Miss., company makes and sells fancy belts for men, women and children, in stretch, needle point and embroidered designs. The woven models come in a variety of color schemes, as well as collegiate logo versions. They retail for $49 for men’s and women’s sizes, and $42 for children’s belts.

The embroidered versions are predominantly aimed at collegiate alumni or the wannabe variety, although there is also a nice-looking belt for the Mardi Gras fans among us ($99).

The needlepoint belts ($175) are currently aimed solely at Mississippi State fans, but I imagine the company will expand this expensive option as interest develops.

The Roosta logo is, of course, the head of a chicken. Each belt’s leather elements, at the buckle and the holed ends, include a stamped copy of the logo – which is why I think they could be a hit here in Delmarva chicken country.

Ashley Cox said she and her husband formerly worked in Memphis, Tenn., for FedEx. They decided to move to Oxford and try something other than corporate life. “It’s been an amazing Show this year,” she said. They will work with clubs or other companies to develop more patterns, with an expected timeframe from concept to production in about 60 days.

Leaving the corporate world seems to be working for the Cox family. Their Roostas belts and other accessories are now available in more than 800 green grass and specialty retail stores. The nearest store carrying Roostas for the Cape Region is the Links at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, Md.
