Traffic light coming to Route 1-Holland Glade Road

Lane, shoulder closures begin Sept. 8; work expected to last two months
September 6, 2025

After years of discussion and planning, a traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Route 1 and Holland Glade Road north of Rehoboth Beach.

The Delaware Department of Transportation announced lane/shoulder closures to begin Monday, Sept. 8, as crews kick off construction of the project. The work will include the installation of new turn lanes and a traffic signal at the intersection. Work is anticipated to continue for about two months, with completion expected prior to Thanksgiving.

Motorists should anticipate construction activity and lane closures in the area; drivers are reminded to slow down and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

Currently, Holland Glade Road ends at Route 1, with no southbound highway access. When the traffic signal project is complete, motorists on Holland Glade Road will be able to cross the northbound lanes to drive south. Currently, they must drive north and make a U-turn to drive south. There will be left-turn, through and right-turn lanes on all four legs of the intersection. The new intersection will allow southbound Route 1 traffic to turn left onto Holland Glade Road, which will likely alleviate backups caused by motorists making U-turns at the intersection of Route 1 and Shuttle Road.

Earlier this year, work was done to add an entrance between IHOP and Tanger Outlets Bayside on the southbound side of Route 1.

DelDOT spokesman Charles “CR” McLeod said the HAWK pedestrian light will be removed during construction, but a new crosswalk will be added as part of the project.
