Nonprofit agency hosts community gathering for neighbors

More than 600 Delawareans receive Thanksgiving meals
December 3, 2025

Thanksgiving Day in Delaware was filled with compassion and partnership as First State Community Action Agency, working alongside the Coolspring Community, Miracle One Foundation, Tailored Care LLC, the Already Amazing Charitable Foundation, and the Sunshine Circle Club, coordinated the preparation and distribution of more than 600 Thanksgiving meals to individuals and families across the state.

Beginning early Thursday morning, volunteers and partners traveled to hotels and motels providing temporary housing for families experiencing homelessness, ensuring they received a warm, dignified holiday meal. Teams also collaborated with community leaders statewide to reach homebound seniors, and visited locations such as crisis and transitional housing programs, ensuring that vulnerable neighbors across Delaware felt remembered and supported during the holiday.

This effort was strengthened by the dedicated volunteerism of Sussex County Alumnae chapter members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.; the Lewes Men of Achievement of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.; and the Harry K Foundation.

First State CAA opened the Bernice M. Edwards Community Conference Room at 1 p.m. to welcome friends, families and neighbors from Georgetown and surrounding communities for a shared Thanksgiving meal. People of all ages and backgrounds gathered, creating a warm space that reflected the true meaning of community – connection, dignity and togetherness.

“Thanksgiving is about care and lifting one another up,” said First State Community Action Agency Executive Director Bernice Edwards. “From supporting families in temporary housing, to ensuring seniors were not alone, to welcoming neighbors into our community space, this day showed the power of what we can accomplish when we work together.”

The gathering was filled with conversation and gratitude as individuals from across the community sat side by side. The agency described the day as a celebration of the strength and compassion that has guided First State Community Action Agency for 60 years.

“We are incredibly grateful to every partner, volunteer and organization that made this possible,” Edwards said. “This is community in action, and it reflects the mission we have carried forward for six decades.”

This Thanksgiving outreach is an example of the many initiatives supported by First State Community Action Agency to support vulnerable households and build stronger, more connected communities statewide.
