Athletes of Week January 16

Cale Baker - Coach Chris Mattioni said, “Senior Cale Baker is wrestling in the 120-pound weight class. He is a 3X state qualifier and 2X placer, finishing eighth his sophomore year and fifth last year. He has always been a good wrestler, and now has become confident in his abilities. He is wrestling at a high level and has had a lot of success this season. His current record is 13-10 with nine pins, and he has 87 career wins. He had a great performance at the War on the Shore in Ocean City, Md. He placed eighth in his weight class with 31 other wrestlers entered and earned 8.5 points for the team. He helped the team finish in sixth place out of 40 teams entered. Cale is in our leadership group and is learning by example. He is a role model for our younger athletes. He will be a big part of the team success this season.“

Hayden Hazzard - This Cape junior honors and AP student is making quite a splash this season on the Lady Vikings swim team. She has garnered six first-place finishes in multiple events including the individual medley, breaststroke, freestyle relays and the grueling 500 freestyle. "Hayden has been a wonderful addition to our girls’ program," said Cape head coach Bill Geppert. "She swims every event with enthusiasm and is a great teammate. I couldn't ask for a better young lady who truly represents our school and program well." A member of Cape’s National Honor Society chapter, Hayden has been academic all-conference for the last two years. In her spare time, she likes to read or play the occasional video game. 

Mallory Kauffman - Mallory is a thrower and a throwback. Last weekend, she placed first in the shot put at the Virginia Beach High School Relays with a throw of 37-feet-9.2-inches, which is three feet farther that he best indoor throw, The throw put her fourth on the all-time Cape list. Mallory takes honors classes, from history to English and physics. She wants to be a lawyer and said her talents lie in language rather than math. This past fall, she was on the Cape state championship unified football team. She also works weekends at Big Oyster, which partners with SoDel Wellness, giving her access to their gym and trainers. “I ran cross country my junior year and now I just feel stronger and quicker in the circle,” she said. “I’m told I have good feet and a quick arm.” “Last spring, Mallory was a surprise winner in the discus at the Meet of Champions, throwing 116 feet. Lance and Trent are her brothers, and she has a sister named Brittany.

London Steigerwalt -  London is a power player for the unbeaten Beacon girls’ basketball team. Last Monday, in a home game versus Fred Thomas, London dropped 23 points in a 51-16 Beacon victory. She scored 19 points Jan. 7, in a 44-23 win over Magnolia. London was a captain on the Beacon volleyball team that went 9-1 on the season. She has been a volleyball-basketball combination athlete all three years of middle school. London plays club volleyball for the Premier Volleyball Club. Her dad Marc is chief operating officer for Position Sports, which has a global footprint. They found Lewes and stayed, and for the next four years in sports circles, Marc will be known as London’s dad.
