Applauding the use of a speed camera

January 20, 2026

As a resident of one of the developments next to the Route 1 construction, I applaud the use of a speed camera. We who live in this area didn't need a camera to know the extent of speeding on this stretch of highway. Speeding is the threat to the safety of law-abiding citizens, not the camera, as one reader suggested.

Entering onto Route 1 south, with cars speeding in excess of 60 mph, has always been risky. It's become increasingly more dangerous from the loss of the traffic light in Milton and the loss of the merge lane from Minos Conaway Road. Motorists now have to pull into speeding traffic from a dead stop. Exiting Route 1 is also more difficult because the sight lines for oncoming traffic are somewhat obstructed by concrete barriers and a large number of orange-and-white barrels.

There was a three-week grace period for speeders. There is an abundant amount of warning signs to slow down because of the work zone. However, it seems that more than 25,000 drivers felt that was just a suggestion.  Speeding still occurs, though the numbers do seem reduced. I guess the only way to get speeders' attention is with a hefty fine. I hope the revenue will be used for some near-future road improvements in Sussex County.
