Snow Is on the Way! - A Doctor’s Tips to Stay Safe and Well

January 23, 2026
With snow in the forecast, it’s a good time to slow down, prepare a bit, and take care of yourself and those around you. Winter storms can be beautiful, but they also bring some real safety risks, especially when it comes to cold exposure, falls, and overexertion.

First, bundle up and limit time outside when it’s very cold. Layers are your friend, and don’t forget hats, gloves, and warm footwear. If you or a loved one starts feeling numb, overly tired, or confused, it’s time to head indoors and warm up.

At home, think ahead in case of power outages. Keep extra blankets, flashlights, and batteries handy. Avoid using grills, stoves, or space heaters that aren’t meant for indoor use; carbon monoxide exposure is a serious and preventable danger. If you have carbon monoxide detectors, make sure they’re working.

Be especially careful on icy steps and sidewalks. Slips and falls are one of the most common winter injuries. Wear shoes with good traction, walk slowly, and clear snow and ice when you can.

If you’re shoveling, take it easy. Snow removal is harder on the heart than many people realize. Pace yourself, lift smaller amounts, and take breaks. If you have heart disease or feel chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness, stop and seek medical care.

Finally, if you can, stay off the roads during heavy snow. If travel is necessary, drive slowly and give yourself extra time.

A little preparation goes a long way. Stay warm, stay safe, and don’t hesitate to check in on neighbors who may need extra help during the storm.
