DOE grant to support GIS technology in agriscience curriculum
Sussex Technical High School received an innovation grant from the Delaware Department of Education to support the integration of geographic information systems into its Plant Science and Natural Resource Management Technology program.
The grant funding will be used to embed GIS technology directly into program coursework, allowing students to develop skills in spatial analysis, data mapping, land-use planning and environmental resource management.
GIS is increasingly recognized as a critical, industry-standard tool within agriscience, agriculture technology and natural resource management, and its use continues to expand as the industry becomes more data-driven and technology-focused.
With GIS implementation, students will gain hands-on experience with tools and applications that are currently used in the field, helping ensure they are prepared for ongoing technological changes reshaping both the agriscience industry and the broader workforce. This aligns with Sussex Tech’s goal of providing students with relevant, future-ready technical skills that directly translate to postsecondary education and employment opportunities.
