Cape wrestling dominates Lake on Senior Night
Four years of high school wrestling go by in a blink of an eye ... or a bloody cotton plug up your nose.
Cape closed out the dual-meet season Feb. 6, with a 63-12 resounding victory over a gritty Lake Forest team.
“The big story tonight is Austin [Guerrieri at] 126 and Nick Walker [at 157] who won tough matches against great wrestlers,” said Cape coach Chris Mattioni.
Guerrieri battled DeMarion Russ, who came into the 126-pound match with a record of 32-3. Guerrieri got the first takedown and cautiously stayed in front for a 5-2 win by decision.
Walker, a defending state champion with a record of 31-4, battled Jerusalem Howard, who entered the match undefeated at 38-0. Howard is a two-time state finalist.
Walker’s hard-changing style resulted in an early three-point takedown. He went on to win by an 8-1 decision. These two are likely to see each other again in the postseason.
Hudson Senard returned to the lineup at 138 pounds and got a pin in 51 seconds over Luke Roswell.
Cape earned the fifth seed in the dual-meet state tournament. The Vikings will travel to St. Georges Wednesday, Feb. 11. The semifinals and finals will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at Smyrna High School.
The Henlopen Conference Championships are set for Feb. 20-21 at Sussex Central High School in Georgetown.
