Grocery Outlet, the self-proclaimed largest extreme value retailer in the nation, has announced it’s closing 36 stores across the country. The location on Route 1 outside Rehoboth Beach is not one of those stores.

The company announced the shakeup March 4, as part of its fourth-quarter market report for 2025. The closures are part of an optimization plan the company’s board of directors adopted a couple of days prior to the report.

Located in the Rehoboth Mall, the local store opened in April 2024. Bridgette Jarrett, owner/operator of the Rehoboth store, said the market is not closing.

“Thanks to the community's support, we are doing well,” said Jarrett in an email March 10.

Two-thirds of the closures are on the East Coast, including eight stores in Maryland, six in New Jersey, six in Ohio and four in Pennsylvania. There are no other Grocery Outlets in Delaware. There is one in Salisbury, Md., which is also not on the closure list.

Prior to being a grocery store, the retail space was primarily known for being a Peebles, which closed in late 2019. In 2021, the space was briefly a Spirit Halloween.
