High school diploma brightens Groves graduate Charles Williams' future

September 1, 2012

When Charles Williams of Ellendale accepted his high school diploma during the Aug. 15 James H. Groves Adult High School graduation ceremonies, he also accepted his key to a brighter future. Williams has always dreamed of serving in the military, just as his father and grandfather did.

Unfortunately, when he went to enlist, Williams learned that the GED he earned after leaving high school in 2008 was not accepted by the military. Delaware Army National Guard recruiting officer Sgt. First Class Michael Cook encouraged Williams to contact Groves Adult High School to obtain his high school diploma.

“Charles scored so well on his Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. He just needed that high school diploma,” said Cook.

After over a year’s commitment of attending night classes, studying and taking tests, Williams finally walked across the stage to accept the piece of parchment paper that would change his life. Williams enlisted as a 94F - computer/detection systems repairer with the 198th Signal Battalion. Added perks to the enlistment include a $15,000 sign-on bonus, payable throughout the six-year enlistment period. He will also be able to receive the GI Bill to have his higher education paid, and receive more than $700 a month in living expenses.

“Success stories like Charles’ are why Groves Adult High School exists,” said Principal Terri Corder. “We are never too old to accomplish our dreams, and Groves wants to be part of that success.”

Williams reports for basic training Sept. 10 at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. From there, he will go to Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga., for advanced individual training in communications.

With high school diploma in hand, Williams now has more confidence. “My goal is to someday attend West Point and be a military officer,” he said. “The military can provide a great career and a good future.”
