Runners ring in the new year in Bethany Beach

January 4, 2014

Four hundred thirty-five runners turned out for the first road races of 2014 in a chilly Bethany Beach on New Year's Day. The Hair of the Dog 5K and 10K events took runners through the under-construction downtown of Bethany and out to Route 1 before finishing on the mile-long boardwalk.

Claiming the first crown of 2014 was 17-year-old Kyle Jones from Newark, who completed the 10K course faster than 110 other competitors, in 39:03. He was quickly followed by Reza Mahbod, 41, of Bethesda, Md., in 39:30. Helen Morrow, 43, of Millsboro, was the first woman to cross the finish line and sixth overall in a time of 46:58.

The 5K was won by a pair of 16-year-old Bethany Beach boys. Mikey Singer and Andrew Michelson clocked times of 17:39.0 and 17:39.5 to finish in a virtual tie. The Top 5 was dominated by youngsters, as 17-year-old Jake Fishkin, 11-year-old Blake Hundley and 16-year-old Dylan Orrell were the next runners to finish the 5K race.

Katie Dickerson, 34, of West Chester, Pa., was the first female runner to finish, with a time of 19:26.
