Eight consecutive games was enough for the Cape baseball team to lose upon returning from a spring vacation play/scrimmage Hawaiian holiday last April 27.
The Curse of Waimea Bay was scuttled and sunken like a used Junk March 30 at Woodbridge as the Cape varsity defeated the Woodbridge Blue Raiders 13-3. Three Cape pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts with Alec McCoy getting the win, taking a “no no” one batter into the fifth before Kai Vitella came on in relief and freshman Zack Gelof closed out a scoreless seventh.
“Alec [McCoy] loaded the basses on walks in the bottom of the first, then struck out their three power hitters - 4-5-6 - in a row, which was a good sign,” said coach Ben Evick.
McCoy drove in Kai Vitella in the first inning and had another hit in the game to help his cause.
Vitella was the hitting star of the game, collecting a single, double and triple along with six RBI.
“Kai would have had seven RBI if Mulcahy hadn’t been called out at the plate on a play he looked way safe,” Evick said.
Jayson Wiberg had a two-run double late in the game, while Mulcahy chased home Gelof to collect an RBI.
Two days later, freshman Austin Elliott pitched six and a third no-hit innings with 11 strike outs as the Vikings downed Delmar 6-2 April 1.
Zach Gelof started off the sixth inning with a single followed by a Drew Mulcahy hit. Kai Vitella walked to load the bases to set up David Kwan single that scored two Viking runs.
The Delmar pitcher balked in the go ahead run. Cape's Will Jarrel singled to start the seventh followed by a Vitella double that brought in a run. David Kennedy finished off the scoring with a two run single.
The team will stay home and practice over spring break – no cliff jumping – before resuming game action Thursday, April 9 at Lake Forest.
