Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek presentation set Feb. 20
Daryl Kobesky, plant production manager of Pleasant Run Nursery, Allentown, N.J., will present Creating a Lively Garden from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Enrichment Centre at East Coast Nursery, 30366 Cordrey Road, Millsboro.
He will highlight various plants that present multi-season interest (flowers, bark, fall color, fruit, etc.) to help extend the gardening season and enrich garden wildlife habitat. He will discuss the importance of understanding each plant’s requirements for exposure and soil conditions, and whether the plant has deer resistance.
Attendance at the lecture is free to Delaware Botanic Gardens members and $15 for nonmembers.
Kobesky graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in environmental planning and design with a concentration in landscape architecture. He then joined in succession two landscape architecture firms in New Jersey, where he worked primarily in construction administration as a project manager, and obtained his license as a landscape architect.
Wishing to re-enter horticulture on a more hands-on level, he joined Richard and Heidi Hesselein at Pleasant Run Nursery as production manager at the age of 30. Since then he has overseen significant expansion of their facilities, production systems and plant varieties (over 1,200 cultivars). He has given plant talks at various trade conferences, garden clubs and educational institutions.
He is on the board of directors for NJNLA and is the South Central Chapter chairperson. He was named the Young Nursery Professional in 2009 and has been featured in both American Nurseryman and Nursery Management Magazine. He has co-taught plant and design courses at Rutgers in the Continuing and Professional Education Department.
