CVSICU Nurse Emma Coleman Honored with Peer Award

June 8, 2017

Bayhealth’s Emma Coleman, RN, is known for her positive attitude and is seen as an asset to the Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit (CVSICU) at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus. In fact, her coworkers believe they’re lucky to have Coleman among them. This is why she was recently named the CVSICU Employee of the Quarter.

The CVSICU Employee of the Quarter is a peer award that recognizes nurses for going above and beyond. A night shift employee, Coleman’s team members noted she always greets the incoming day shift with a big smile in the morning making it a refreshing start to their day. “Emma is always a pleasure to work with,” a nominator wrote. “She takes exceptional care of her patients and their families. She never hesitates to lend a helping hand to her peers. Her positive attitude makes her a wonderful asset to our team and we’re lucky to have her.”

Coleman has been a Bayhealth nurse for two years, starting out on a medical-surgical unit before transferring to CVSICU a year ago. Coleman said she is humbled and honored to be recognized by her peers. “We have a great group working on the unit,” Coleman said. “We have a good team and autonomy among the nurses. I really like the people I work with.”

Her passion for helping people and making an impact in other people’s lives is what drove Coleman to become a nurse. “We get to see our patients come full circle. They come in at their worst and hopefully leave walking out of the door. It’s nice to see our patients successfully come out on other side,” Coleman said.

CVSICU is an eight-bed unit that takes care of postoperative cardiovascular and thoracic surgical patients. Staff on the unit cares for patients at every phase of open heart surgery including pre-operative teaching, surgical recovering and discharge.
