February 13, 2024

The Cape girls’ basketball team continues to roll through Henlopen Conference play, taking a 57-32 victory over Sussex Tech Feb. 12. The Vikings, now 12-5, hope to take the leap into the DIAA playoffs in two weeks.

Sophomore center Amalia Fruchtman tallied 22 points, three rebounds and five blocks. Since Cape’s last loss to Dover Jan. 25, Fruchtman has scored 126 points for an average of 21 points per game.

“The games have boosted our confidence in the last couple of weeks,” said Fruchtman. “It’s great that everyone gets in and gets playing time. It allows us to work with everyone just as well as the next person. It will help us down the line.”

Faith Re dropped nine points, while Hayden Hudson added eight points, 10 boards and four blocks.

The Rishko girls, Lulu and Mairead, combined for eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.

“It’s really fun playing with my sister,” said Lulu. “We have competition among ourselves in practice and it relaxes us getting ready for the games.”

“I thought tonight was the most complete game we’ve played,” said coach Pat Woods. “We got positive production from everyone. We also executed some things that we haven’t been able to up to this point. With each player and coach being the best version of themselves, our team, collectively, can then become the best version of ourselves. We are working on everyone giving 100% and not caring who gets glory or minutes, just that the team is successful.”

The Vikings JV squad remains undefeated at 12-0 with a 45-18 victory over the JV Ravens. Sydney Whetzel and Maya Yngve led the JV team  with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Harper Mamele played tough under the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds. Jurnee White scored nine. Amara Fruchtman and Jerny Haines teamed for nine points and seven rebounds.

The Vikings have three games remaining in the regular season. They will host Smyrna (11-4) at 5:15 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, for Teacher Appreciation Night. They will travel to Ursuline Academy (12-4) for a game at 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 19, before wrapping up the regular season at Polytech (5-12) at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21.
