In the annual postseason upstate-versus-downstate girls’ basketball game, it was the northern girls in Blue winning 105-78 over the southern Gold team.

Cape’s Mya Maull, representing the Gold team, said it was exciting to be honored with a selection.

“It was fun to play with girls from different schools,” Maull said.

Two of those different schools were Delmarva Christian and Sussex Tech, represented by Journey Handy and Maleyah Bell, respectively.

“It was very competitive,” Handy said. “We all got to play a lot, and it was cool.”

Handy, who can score from almost anywhere on the court, represented her team in the three-point competition and was helped out by Maull and Bell. Placing second, the Delmarva Christian senior was defeated by Red Lion Christian Academy’s Delaney Burroughs.

“Delaney was great, and even though she beat me out, it was still fun,” Handy said.

Bell also enjoyed her time and had been looking forward to the game for quite a while.

“Growing up, I got to see all my friends playing in it, so it was fun getting to experience the same things they got to experience,” Bell said.

Leading up to the game, the girls practiced with one another a few times and were able to bond a bit.

“I knew a couple of the girls before, but during the practices, I got to know them a lot more, and we were able to build little relationships,” Bell said.

The Ravens player led the trio in rebounds with five and scoring with nine. She finished second on the Gold team in scoring.

“All I know is just to go out there and kill,” Bell said. “Just go out there and do everything you can do.”

Maull netted seven points for her team and made several hustle plays for the skilled Gold squad.

“Everyone out here was really good, so it was competitive,” Maull said. “I hope everyone enjoyed the game.”

Handy scored three points and remained her usual humble self, both in making plays on the court and complimenting everyone but herself. She also enjoyed the quality of play.

“It felt really smooth and it was fun,” Handy said. “Our defense wasn’t quite there, but our offense had the touch.”
