Cape girls’ lax scores final five goals to beat OCNJ 12-7

April 29, 2024

The “L” girls elevated their games when focus required frenzy April 27 at Champions Stadium.

Cape handled its business by holding off the Jersey girls of Ocean City and winning 12-7, but the voyage was rough and stormy as Cape trailed 5-4 at halftime.

The Lopez sisters, along with Lindsay D’Ambrogi and Lulu Rishko, stepped up and snapped in the second half.

Anna Lopez was unconscious in goal, stopping many rocket shots while notching her 250th career save.

“Games like today are so much fun,” she said. “I prefer being under attack and having to make plays. Ocean City reminded me of us. They were fast and tough and just kept coming. And during the game and afterwards, they were all so nice. I’m glad we played them and got to meet players from across the bay.”

The score was tied at 7-7 with 5:41 left in the third period when Rishko took off and took over. The fluid druid of the Cape midfield powered down the slot going right-handed and left-handed, and finished with a season-high five goals.

Down on attack, it was Lopez (Claire) and Lindsay (D’Ambrogi) who combined for three goals and six assists. Freshmen Haley Gamuciello (two goals) and Mairead Rishko (one goal) scored for Cape, while all-purpose midfielder Grace Wiggins also had a goal.

Ocean City goals were scored by Delaine Sutley and Kelsea Cooke with two each, and single goals from Marley Ostander, Katie Pierce and Brynn Culmone.

Cape is scheduled face winless Sussex Tech at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, then will host Lake Forest (5-6) at 6:15 p.m., Friday, May 3, which is Senior Night. Cape will graduate 13 seniors.
