Cape JV soccer hosts play day

Vikings prepare for Friday’s opener
September 8, 2017

The Cape junior varsity soccer squad hosted a four-team scrimmage Sept. 5. Sussex Tech, Laurel and Seaford battled the Vikings in the final preseason competition before the opener Friday at Legends Stadium.

Sussex Tech was first up on the Cape docket, as the Vikings and Ravens battled in the usual tough and high-spirited scrimmage. The Vikings then matched up with Seaford, where the Blue Jays and Vikings played equally hard. The Bulldogs took on Cape in the nightcap, and each team scored once.

“It was a good eye-opener for the team,” said Cape JV coach Ariel Espinoza. “It was a good test. This will get them ready for the beginning of the season, and it showed us what we have to work on. We are taking it one game at a time.”

“I’m very pleased with the growth of our JV players and team,” said Cape varsity coach Patrick Kilby. “I truly believe that they will have a wonderful season, and the future looks bright for Cape soccer.”

Cape looks to improve on a good 2016 season, when they went 9-2-3.

“This is the first time we’ve had just freshmen and sophomores on the JV team,” said Kilby. “Ariel is doing a wonderful job preparing his players as the future of our program.”

The Vikings’ JV preseason record was 4-1-1. They will host Sussex Academy at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8.
