Cape soccer ends season with 8-1 loss to Sallies

November 16, 2017

The Cape Henlopen soccer team’s season came to an end in the semifinals of the DIAA State Tournament with an 8-1 loss to nationally ranked Salesianum School Nov. 15 at Smyrna High School.

Top-seeded Salesianum put four goals on the board in the first 12 minutes of the game and added two more by the 34-minute mark to take a 6-0 lead into the halftime break.

The second half started off with the Henlopen Conference prolific scoring combination of Uly Slagle to Zack Gelof teaming up for one more goal of their careers to put the Vikings on the scoreboard, but that would be the only tally Cape would get.

Sallies added two more goals in the second half to move them into the DIAA finals with Appoquinimink.

“We ran into a buzzsaw tonight,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “It happens. I think three of the four years, the seniors made it to the semifinals. I’m just really proud of the team.”

Kilby was quick to praise the winning squad.

“Sallies is a nationally ranked program with miles of experience on those legs,” said Kilby. “They’re a pedigree that we’re not used to and we don’t have down south. It is what it is.”

The team got together for one more Cape cheer before leaving the field and you could hear the players say “It’s been a pleasure, guys. Let’s go, guys,” and “Love you guys” as they proudly gave a loud “Cape!”

The Vikings finished their season with a 13-4 record.
