Cape soccer falls to Dover 2-1 but bounces back with Brandywine

October 14, 2023

The Cape boys’ soccer squad fell to 7-2 with a 2-1 loss to Dover on Cancer Awareness Night Oct. 12. Dover improved to 7-4.

After a physical back-and-forth first half, Dover hit the twine first on a corner at the 31-minute mark with a header goal by Wadley Jecrois.

In the second half, riddled with yellow cards, Cape tied the score on a penalty kick by Cardin Benjamin at 62 minutes.

The tie lasted just eight minutes, as Dover scored the go-ahead goal and held on to garner the Northern Division victory.

“It was a tough loss that really hurt our chances to win the Henlopen North,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “But if there could ever be a good loss, this would be it. It brought leadership qualities out of players like Donovan Sandoval. After the loss, he addressed the team, and if what Donovan had to say doesn’t rally the troops, then I don’t know what will. We have a quick turnaround as we play Brandywine on Saturday. My hope is that the team refocuses and comes together so we can get back to our winning ways.”

The Cape junior varsity team defeated Dover JV 1-0 on a goal by Austin Tyndall from Jonathan Rodriguez.

The Cape freshman squad defeated St. Andrew’s 5-0. Goals were scored by Dominic Valentin with two, and single scores from Zuriel Ramos, Carter Shockley and Roany Floer-Lares. Helpers came from Josue Rodriguez-Arevalo and Kevin Ramierez-Martin.

Before the game, the Vikings honored Beacon Middle school soccer player Madison Handley, who is battling cancer. A 50/50, half of the gate proceeds and all of the proceeds from concessions benefited Madison’s family to help defray medical costs.

The Vikings hosted Brandywine Saturday, Oct. 14, and got back to the winning side of the scoreboard with a 2-1 victory over the  Bulldogs.

Cape got on the board first when Brady Spiegel took a Collin Sivels pass and buried it in the twine at the eight-minute mark. The Dogs scored just before the half, and when the regular game clock finished, the two teams went into OT.

Jerzy Haines scored 19 minutes into the extra stanza to give the Vikings their eighth win of the season.

The Vikings outshot the Bulldogs 14-2 and held an 8-0 edge in penalty corners. Goalie Jake Hutchison made a save for the Vikings, while Brandywine’s Hans Bober stopped 12 Cape shot attempts.

“It was a good win,” said Kilby. “We controlled the entirety of the match. However, we struggled in the final third, we could not finish. It was one of those days that was very frustrating for us. One of our vocal leaders and captains, Jerzy Haines, came through for us with a minute left in overtime to end the game. It was a smart play by Cardin Benjamin, playing the short ball off the corner to Brandon Loucks, who then played a nice chip in to the near post for Jerzy to finish with his head.”

The Vikings play host to Indian River Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Legends Stadium.
