Cape soccer has skilled athletes at every position

Vikings battle Jaguars to a draw in 80-minute scrimmage
March 16, 2018

Brutally unpleasant conditions for fans prevailed during a March 14 suppertime soccer scrimmage at Legends Stadium, as Pat Kilby’s boot scooters hosted the Jaguars of Appoquinimink.

The players just played; they didn’t seem to notice 30-knot winds out of the northwest blowing crossways across the screaming green pitch.

“Appoquinimink was one goal shy of reaching the state finals last season,” said coach Patrick Kilby after his athletic team battled to a 2-2 draw after 80 minutes of up-and-down soccer. “Our mantra is keep everything positive and be competitive in everything we do. The team stepped up and played well. I honestly think we have a chance to be the best girls’ team ever here at Cape and to make the tournament. We have athletic and skilled players at every position. And we have one of the state’s top goalies in sophomore Lucy Siranides.”

Cape scored early in the contest when Lindsey Swontek took a through pass from Brooke Hollingsworth and went nearside post for the score.

Sydney Zych scored off an unsettled situation in the second half to push Cape to a 2-1 lead that was followed by several athletic saves by Siranides on flurries in front of the goal. A Jaguars striker snuck through in the final minutes for a scrimmage-tying score. (No numbered roster was available for Appo.)

“We end the preseason with a Wednesday night [March 21] scrimmage hosting Lake Forest,” Kilby said. “I hope people will come out and watch us play. This is going to be a fun team to watch.”

Cape is coming off a 9-6 season and will open at Laurel Tuesday, March 27. Gary Montalto, Jess Jarecki and Ariel Espinoza are assistant coaches.

Kilby’s Korner Kicks - “Claire Rasin, Lindsey Swontek, Madalyn Swontek, Colleen Donohoe, Brayden Fannin, Sydney Zych, Hannah Bieler, Brooke Hollingsworth, Leah Marsh and Darby Klopp will all be starting for us. They are returning starters from last season. Madalyn Swontek is starting as a freshmanWe are relying heavily on the Swontek sisters and Brooke Hollingsworth to handle a large bulk of our offensive output. Colleen Donohoe and Brayden Fannin will hold down our back line as our center backs. They bring a wealth of club experience and organization to our back line. They will be flanked by speedster Darby Klopp and the very hard-tackling Leah Marsh. Hannah Bieler and Sydney Zych will be our outside mids. Sydney and Hannah bring a lot of energy, physical play and service from the outside.”
