Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball defeats Sabres
The Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball team was 10 points better in the fourth quarter than a spirited Sts. Peter and Paul team in the Royals’ 34-24 win Feb. 6 in Georgetown. The Royals are 15-1.
Royals senior Mia Elliott led with 13 points. Senior Journey Handy tallied six points, seven rebounds and four steals. Ryley McCluskey dropped in six points and made three steals.
The Royals out-rebounded the Sabres 37-30. Junior Layni Dukes smashed the boards for 12 rebounds, while Evelyn Bohinski grabbed seven.
The Royals took a one-point 16-15 lead into the halftime break. The third stanza ended with the two teams tied 22-22, but the Royals sharpened their attack and bested the Sabres 12-2 in the fourth to take their second ESIAC win from Sts. Peter and Paul this season.
“In the fourth quarter, we really wanted it more,” said Handy, “We didn’t have a very good first half, but we turned it into our best offensive game after that. Everybody raised the bar. We did what we had to do to win. It was a hard one, but we won.”
“We didn’t give up in the fourth quarter,” said Elliott. “We stayed aggressive and kept that winning mentality, and we encouraged each other. We played as a team. If we keep pushing, we’ll do well.”
“I’m just happy top get the win,” said coach Frank Roach. “We have some unfinished business. I know they got us last year a couple of times, so we wanted to finish up this year right. We have one more to take care of this season. They beat us in the ESIACs last year. We have to keep our minds focused. We were rushing the whole game. In the huddle, I told them to settle down and see all of the options. I think they did.”
Since the Royals lost to Parkside Dec. 26 at the Governor’s Challenge, they have reeled off seven straight wins, outscoring opponents 378-190 and averaging 54 points per game.
