Fetterman puts down 16 for Royals

The Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball team moved to 14-2 on the season with a 51-33 win over Worcester Prep in an Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference matchup Feb. 6 at home. They had previously defeated the Mallards 40-32 Dec. 18 in Berlin.

Royals freshman Gracie Fetterman scored 16, while teammates Camryn Breasure and Kandice Schlabach each added 10. Jabre'a Purnell and Abby Agapito sunk eight and six, respectively.

The Royals’ high-pressure defense of Fetterman and Purnell kept the Mallards in check for the first half, as the Royals took a 24-15 lead into the locker room.

“We changed a couple of things in the second half and tried to attack Gracie Gardner, and we got her in a little bit of foul trouble,” said Delmarva Christian head coach Pat McCrea. “That made it a little easier for my tall girl, Camryn Breasure. I told Camryn to just be patient and keep going at her. Then Jabre'a Purnell came in and did unbelievable on defense.”

The first-year Royals coach was quick to praise his young guard Fetterman.

“She’s the one that makes us go,” he said. “She’s our motor. When she plays like she can play, there aren’t too many point guards that are as good as her.”

“We started off with a full-court press to see if we could get some points off that,” said Fetterman, a former Greenwood Mennonite point guard. “Our high-pressure defense worked.”

Hannah and Hailey Merritt each scored six to lead the Mallards.

The Lady Royals hosted Easton’s Sts. Peter & Paul Feb. 7 and defeated the Sabres 29-18 in a battle of the defenses. Kandice Schlabach led the Royals with 13 points, while Breasure chipped in seven and Agapito put in five. The Royals are now 15-2 and will welcome the Dover Senators Friday, Feb. 9.
