George Henry Mitchell, Real Sussex Countian

August 30, 2016

George Henry Mitchell, 96 years, 10 months and 22 days, of Lewes, closed the book on his remarkable life Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2016.
Mr. Mitchell was born in what was called Indian River Hundred, Oct. 2, 1919, the eldest son of the late William Henry Mitchell and Marion Ash Mitchell. He was the second child of a family of nine. The family moved to Lewes Beach early on when it was a more humble place than it is now. He spent his early years working with his father in the painting business and joined the Navy when his country called in 1939, serving until 1945, seeing action in the Pacific. His first ship was the Arkansas, and his last was the Biloxi which were always a source of great pride and many fascinating stories.

After the war he worked for Consolidated Fish Co. where he met and married Virginia Deale, a Lewes girl from Dewey Avenue. In 1955 he worked at Fort Miles and later went to work for the City of Lewes, becoming street foreman and serving his town for 20 years.
Mr. Mitchel was a 55-year Mason with Jefferson Lodge No. 15. He served as past master and was also a Shriner.
If words could capture the essence of a man of few words, as George was, it would have to be said he was a Real Sussex Countian, born and raised in the best sense of that designation. He loved his wife, his home, his city and his country. He always flew his flags correctly, had a phenomenal grasp of Lewes history, was kind and very helpful to his neighbors. In fact, he was the Mayor of Dewey Avenue, a title he inherited from Virginia's father, Mr. Theodore Deale.

He loved hunting, fishing, woodworking, taking trips with Virginia, and back in the day, being on the water. He also loved gardening and took great pride in keeping his house in perfect condition and being at Arby's on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sons and four siblings. He is survived by Virginia, his wife of 62 years; sisters Edna, Bea and Bessie; his brother, Alfred; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held in the chapel at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, Monday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m.
Mrs. Mitchell requests no flowers, but if you are so inclined, make a donation to your favorite charity in his name or do a good deed for a neighbor.
George, like all those in his generation, lived a hard but in some ways pure life, they gave when called to give; they served their communities without fanfare, were quiet everyday heroes, and above all they were the toughest of the tough.
