The Greene Turtle Race Series on tap

July 8, 2016

Next weekend will begin another series of three races, as the inaugural Greene Turtle Race Series will begin in Rehoboth Beach with the ninth annual Race for the Ribbon 5K Saturday, July 16, at 7:30 a.m. Runners and walkers can visit www.seashorestriders.com to get registered, and once they cross the finish line they are automatically entered in the series.

The second stop will be Sunday, Aug. 14, as the eighth annual Harry K. Foundation 10K/5K will take off from the Greene Turtle in Lewes at 8:15 a.m.  The final stop will be Saturday, Oct. 1, as the Harry K Foundation Backpack 5K will be held from the Rehoboth Beach Greene Turtle with a 9 a.m. start. Visit races2run.com to register for the second and third stops in the series.

Points will be awarded to the top five places in each age group. Points will be doubled for the Greene Turtle 10K.

If you change age groups during the series because of your birthday, the first age group you were in will be used. Overall winners of an event will be put into their age groups for scoring.

Runners love series events, and here is another great series produced by Races2Run and Seashore Striders, and hosted by the Greene Turtle that you can challenge yourself to complete and all for a great cause.

The five-miler will begin at Deauville Beach and loop Henlopen Acres and North Shores before returning to Deauville Beach for a post-race gathering. This event will make a donation to the local Sussex Family YMCA, and this event is the oldest in Rehoboth Beach in its 34th year! Join us for No. 10 in the series.

Ritter competes at Olympic Trials

Local Emily Ritter competed July 4 at the Olympic Trials 3,000 meter steeplechase event, which is nearly eight laps of jumping 28 barriers and a water jump every lap through 1.86 miles. It was the biggest race Ritter has qualified for and Ritter has enjoyed her share of big races over the past two years. In 2015, Ritter became the first woman and just the third athlete ever from Rider’s track and field program to compete in the NCAA Championships, where she placed ninth in the nation. She also became Rider’s first All-American track and field athlete, making her the fourth All-American female athlete in Rider history. Rider named Ritter, along with B.J. Clagon ’18 of the wrestling team, as the Rider University Athletes of the Year for 2014-15. Three heats with 36 athletes took to the track, with the top runners breaking away from the field in each of the heats. Fourteen went to the final with 9:46.3 being the cutoff to get in. Ritter has run 9:48 this season, but it was not her day, as she finished in 10:19 for 32nd place. Good Job to local Emily Ritter, as she made it to the starting line in one of the most prestigious meets in the country - the Olympic Trials.
