Leslie A. ‘Les’ Armour, decorated fireman
Leslie A. "Les" Armour, 73, of Greenwood, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2017, at Country Rest Home, Greenwood.
Les was born and raised in Houston, son of the late Lloyd V. and Mary (Johnson) Armour.
Les worked in the power house as an electrician for the Seaford DuPont Nylon Plant, retiring several years ago. Les started his volunteer fire service as a junior fireman with Houston Volunteer Fire Company, and went on to become a life member of Carlisle Fire Company in Milford, joining in 1971, and remaining active until his recent illness. Les served on numerous committees and held the positions of director, ambulance captain, building superintendent, and was fire chief from 1978-80.
In 1985, Les was honored with the Carlisle Heroic Fireman of the Year, and in 1988 was presented the Carlisle Fireman of the Year. Les also served as an EMT with the Milton Fire Department Station 85, and was an instructor for many years at the fire school.
Les attended Crossroad Community Church. He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, and had developed a love of photography which took him to Alaska three times for amazing photographic opportunities.
Les is survived by his daughter, Deanna Rae Biles and husband David of Greenwood; a sister, Beatrice Layton of Harrington; and his companion of many years, Doris Deputy; along with her daughter, Sharon Smith and husband Steve, as well as her granddaughter, Kaylie.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 2, in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Homes, 119 NW Front St., Milford, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will immediately follow at Milford Community Cemetery.
