The Olympics are coming to a close

August 19, 2016

The U.S. continues to dominate the medal count. Now that the swimming events are over, the track and field team is picking up the slack. Last night in the women's 110 meter hurdles, the U.S. managed to make some history by sweeping the medal stand for the first time in any women's track and field event.

Most people probably know this happened, but in a previous track event, a French male runner was disqualified for a false start. This was unfair in my opinion, because in previous Olympics it took two false starts to be disqualified from an event. That should still be the case. Or at least one extra chance like the fault is done in tennis! For this competitor, this hiccup was devastating. After all the hard work to get to the Olympics and have only this one event for his chance at a medal proved to be incredibly unfortunate.

I have been pleasantly surprised how well golf has been supported by fans in Brazil as part of the Olympics. Englishman Justin Rose won the Gold medal for the men with a strong performance from start to finish. It was really cool to hear the interviews with players from all over the world and how much the whole Olympic experience affected them. I hope the women's event also gets warm fan support over the weekend, and that their tournament finishes as close as the men's did.

Another UK star, Andy Murray, won his second straight Gold Medal in tennis, while Monica Puig from Puerto Rico won women's tennis Gold. Puig is the first female from Puerto Rico to get a Gold in an Olympic event. Both Murray and Puig played extremely well while many of the world's best tennis players lost in early rounds.

Enjoy the close of the Rio Summer Olympic games. There's still the para Olympics to follow come the beginning of September. I hope the coverage is better than it's been in the past. Go USA!

The Eagles have won their first preseason game over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately, Carson Wentz, the Eagles’ rookie quarterback, bruised his ribs and will be out for the rest of the preseason. This could be a good thing so that there is no quarterback controversy at all; at least for the beginning of the season. Thursday's game is against the Pittsburgh Steelers, my Uncle Scott's favorite team. Go Eagles!!

The Phillies’ inconsistent play continues. No surprise there. On this home stand they swept three games from the Colorado Rockies, and then proceeded to lose the first two games easily to the Dodgers. Chase Utley made his triumphant comeback to Philly as a member of the Dodgers by hitting two home runs (one being a grand slam!) and driving in six runs. He is one of my favorite Phillies of all time because of how hard he plays every game. In my opinion, he is destined for the Hall of Fame. So I will warn you all now. If the Dodgers make the playoffs, I will be cheering for them.
