South River escapes Cape 8-6 in lax game dominated by defense

Vienna Iacona records 13 saves on 21 shots
April 25, 2018

Cape girls’ lacrosse is a proven Delaware dominant team that goes looking for trouble across bridges, both the Chesapeake and St. Georges. The process for Cape lacrosse since 2009 has been to step up and out to frame and focus where their game needs to go and get there by tournament time.

South River (9-1) came to Cape April 24 with its best team since 2005. A blend of senior leadership and youthful athleticism going up against an undefeated Cape (8-0) team that former coach P.J. Kesmodel thinks may be Cape’s best team ever.

The Seahawks got out of town with an 8-6 win over Cape in the lowest offensive output game of the season for both teams. Cape junior goalie Vienna Iacona, a first-year starter in goal, had 13 saves on 21 shots.

“Our entire defense played an incredible game against a great team, but we didn’t shoot well on the offensive end,” said coach Lindsey Eichner. “And somewhere during a stretch of the second half we uncharacteristically turned the ball over with bad passes and unforced errors. But a credit to this team, they showed grit by bearing down in the final 10 minutes, pushing not just to play well but to win the game.”

Cape trailed 5-3 at the half powered by a pair of goals by Lindsay Monigle and a single tally from Alia Marshall. Katie Frederick scored early in the second half to close the Seahawks’ lead to 5-4.

But turnovers gave the Seahawks extra possessions, and they ran off three straight goals for an 8-4 lead.

Cape got back in the neighborhood on goals from Annie Judge and Victoria Lockwood for the final of 8-6.

The Seahawks outshot Cape 21-13.

Vienna Iacona recorded 13 saves, while Carly Mansur had seven.

Mallory Jones had a pair of assists.

Seahawks goals came from Kathleen Sullivan with three, Kelsey Winters with two and single goals from Alexis Grant, Madeline Lenkhart and Lauren Zinkle.

Cape trounces Sussex Academy

Cape bounced back April 25 with a 16-1 dominating victory over Sussex Academy.

Katie Frederick and Mallory Jones each recorded a hat trick to pace the Vikings. Also contributing were Emily Monigle, Victoria Lockwood and Sawyer Walker with two goals each, and Lola Messick, Meredith Lockwood, Reilly Spinelli and Kaylie Truitt with one apiece.

Goalie Vivian Lynn tallied three saves and Vienna Iacona had one for Cape.

Scoring Sussex Academy’s lone goal was Mia Kwan. Goalkeeper Grace Scott had four saves for the Seahawks.

Cape will head to Parkside Monday, April 30, then to Polytech Wednesday, May 2.
