Vegan brunch hosted by Michelle’s at Dover Downs

Plant-based dishes draw raves from attendees
October 1, 2016

Veg-minded diners seeking a plant-based version of the popular weekend brunch ritual gathered for a special vegan brunch Sept. 25 at Michelle's restaurant, inside Dover Downs. The event was hosted by the local organization VegDover, and featured inspired dishes from Sous Chef John Flamer of Michelle's.

Upwards of 30 people attended, including individuals from the VegRehoboth group that made the trip north. They were joined by veg-friendly people from Newark and as far away as Salisbury, Md. Flamer's menu featured an assortment of enticing dishes from entrees to desserts, all created entirely free of animal products.

The food drew rave reviews from the diverse group of attendees. A stand-out favorite was the house-made seitan, served in roast-beef-like slices with grilled onions. "I can't believe how this tastes," said Sara Osborne of Dover. Seitan, made from wheat, also was the basis for the vegan pepper steak, another show-stopper.

The creative menu also featured an array of dishes where vegetables and unusual fruits were the stars and not just the sides. Guests feasted on seasonal vegetables from broccoli rabe to purple carrots, and the colorful Indonesian fruit rambutan. Another standout dish was the cauliflower hummus, with the creamy spread elevated by the contrasting crunch of grated cauliflower.

Throughout the meal, Flamer wandered through, personally attending to the food and greeting people at their tables to answer questions. Numerous guests stood up to shake his hand and thank him for the outstanding food.

"We're so thrilled with the success of this event, and so grateful to Chef John. He really used his creative talents to showcase just how delicious meat-free food can be," said VegDover Director Charles Wolfe.

VegDover is open to the public and hosts a variety of events throughout the year. "We're a friendly and welcoming group, and definitely not just for vegetarians and vegans," said Wolfe. "We especially welcome those who are just getting started or 'veg-curious.'"
