Willard S. Ellingsworth, devoted husband, father

May 22, 2018

Willard S. Ellingsworth of Milford, 83, loving husband and father, departed this life Saturday, May 19, 2018, at his home.

Born in Milford July 8, 1934, to Roy W. and Emma G. Ellingsworth, he grew up in Milton and Overbrook, where he helped his father on the family farm and graduated from Lewes High School.

Willard met the love of his life, Emma, while working as manager of the former Acme supermarket in Lewes, where the future Mrs. Ellingsworth was also employed. The couple eloped to Easton, Md., July 16, 1955. They enjoyed many years in Point Pleasant and Charleston, W.Va., before returning to live in Overbrook, and finally settling in Milford.

After a career as a supermarket manager, he was employed by Southern States Cooperative in Milford, and also spent 12 years as a customer service representative and greeter at the Milford Walmart Supercenter.

Willard was beloved by his family, and was a fiercely loyal friend. Always ready with a smile and helping hand, he was a gentle soul with a true heart of gold. He loved talking about current events - especially about his beloved Philadelphia Phillies.

In addition to his parents, Willard was preceded in death by his sister, Bessie Willey. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Emma L. Ellingsworth of Milford; his son, Willard Patrick Ellingsworth and his wife Elizabeth of Greenwood; and his daughter, Jennifer Ellingsworth of Milton.

Services are private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation Inc., 248 East Chestnut Hill Road, Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713 or cchfoundation.net.
