Unit 28 commemorates 150th anniversary of Emancipation Proclamation

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 recently held a Black History Month program commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

The evening began with Rep. Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown, presenting a tribute from the House of Representatives, followed by selected readings from author Alice Walker and poet Langston Hughes. There was a presentation focusing on the achievements of blacks from the Revolutionary War to today. The evening ended with musical selections from Gloria Holland and Greg Fuller, former Sussex County recorder of deeds.
