Sussex Tech seniors share February Jefferson Award

The Student Leadership Team at Sussex Technical High School has chosen Amanda Sava and Zachary Cannon as the recipients of the February 2013 Jefferson Award.

Amanda Sava of Seaford is a dedicated volunteer student who has given approximately 100 hours with Seashore Striders Racing Systems, which puts on races in the Rehoboth-Lewes area almost every weekend throughout the summer and during the year. Before the races start, she helps with race-day registration and preregistration, handing out race shirts and bib numbers.

Amanda is a senior studying media broadcasting communications technologies. She has been accepted to Florida Institute of Technology, the University of Maryland College Park and the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

Zac Cannon of Seaford has volunteered 87.5 hours so far in his senior year at the Sussex County Courthouse, Café of Hope and with his local 4-H chapter. In the past, he has also received the Delaware Volunteer Elective Credit which requires 90 volunteer hours in a year and the President’s Volunteer Award which requires 100-plus volunteer hours.

Zac is a legal support services and criminal justice technologies major. He has been accepted to Florida State University, the University of Florida and the University of Delaware.

The Jefferson Awards Youth Service Initiative program is part of the prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America that was cofounded by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The Youth Service Initiative was begun to pass on the tradition of volunteering to future generations.
