Groves graduate Barbara Hodge earns Ethel M. Cook Memorial Scholarship

August 27, 2013

Barbara Hodge of Ocean View was presented with the Ethel M. Cook Memorial Scholarship at the James H. Groves High School graduation Aug.14 in Georgetown.

It was the 20th year of the scholarship to honor the memory of Ethel Cook, who graduated from James H. Groves High School in 1989 at the age of 79. The scholarship was established by her son, former Groves teacher Dan Cook, after her death in 1992. Ethel would always say, "You're never too old to learn."

The scholarship benefits graduates who had to drop out of high school due to hardship but returned to fulfill their dreams of getting a high school diploma and further their post high school education.

Shown presenting the scholarship to Barbara Hodge is Ethel Cook's grandson James Cook.
