Safe Haven to close Dec. 1

Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary’s Board of Directors has announced the Georgetown-based shelter will close Sunday, Dec. 1, due to lack of funds.

Representatives from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have been at Safe Haven’s Shingle Point Road facility ensuring the health of the 100 dogs that are still at the shelter. The ASPCA has taken care of the animals since Safe Haven ran out of money to pay for staff Oct. 26.

Throughout October, Safe Haven has been focusing on getting its dogs adopted and out of the shelter. According to board member Lynn Lofthouse, the dog population has been reduced from 143 to 100, and that was before an adoption event.

In a statement, the board said, “We appreciate all those who in any way have contributed to Safe Haven.”

As for the future of the dogs, Lofthouse said, “All dogs will be transferred to other reputable 501c3 shelters that meet our standards or will have been adopted.”

Safe Haven will be open every day but Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Thursdays from 12 noon to 7 p.m., until Dec. 1 to adopt out the dogs.
