Paul Mylander presents the Paul Mylander Award to Patricia Sandy for her service and support to the Southern Delaware American Heart Association. Sandy has dedicated countless hours to raising funds to battle heart disease after losing her son to a massive heart attack. She is the chairwoman of Go Red for Women, an active member of the Southern Delaware American Heart Association Heart Ball, treasurer of the Beebe Healthcare Auxiliary and was chosen as one of the Delmarvalous Women 2013. Identical twins Pat Olekszyk, left, and Micki Gaffney talk about life as trailblazers pediatric cardiology. Micki was the first child to undergo open heart surgery at the age of 5 in 1959. They have dedicated countless hours to the American Heart Association, known as the Heart Fund. Research into the treatment of congenital heart disease has resulted in enormous advancements, in part due to research grants awarded yearly for decades by the American Heart Association. The 28th Annual Southern Delaware Heart Ball was held at Dover Downs Ballroom March 22 with a theme of “Start Spreadin’ the News.” This fundraiser has helped advance the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association, a mission that has impacted the lives of thousands of men, women and children in the southern Delaware area.

Contributions received go far in supporting cardiovascular research, professional and community education, and advocacy efforts. The event featured hundreds of silent auction items along with some valuable live auction items, dinner, dancing, survivor testimonials and the presentation of the Paul Mylander Award.
