Joseph R. Gordon, Rehoboth meter dept. retiree

Joseph R. Gordon, 82, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014, at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. He was born Nov. 19, 1931, in Providence, R.I,. son of the late Joseph Raymond and Helen (MacGillivray) Gordon.

Mr. Gordon proudly served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, achieving the rank of master sergeant. Following his retirement from active duty, Mr. Gordon was honorably discharged in 1969. He embarked on a 20-year successful career with the Navy Federal Credit Union, originally located in Navy Yard, Washington, D.C., and later in Vienna, Va. In 1999, Mr. Gordon retired to the Rehoboth Beach resort area. Not one for sitting idle, he enjoyed 10 years additional employment with the Rehoboth Beach Meter Department.

He enjoyed traveling and attending Broadway shows in New York City. Throughout his life, Mr. Gordon was an avid coin collector who obtained some of the rarest coins during his many travels. Mr. Gordon will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A Catholic Prayer Service will be held Thursday, May 15, at 2 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where a public viewing will begin at 1 p.m. Interment will be held at a later time at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Gordon's memory to DE SPCA - Sussex Chapter, 22918 DuPont Hwy., Georgetown, DE 19947, and/or Tunnell Cancer Center, c/o Beebe Medical Foundation, 424 Savannah Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
