May 30, 2014

The Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club will celebrate National Get Outdoors Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 14. The event will be held at the Milford Club, 101 Delaware Veterans Blvd. off Airport Road in Milford. The day will underscore the connection to natural resources through play and creative activities. This will be the second year that the Milford Club hosts the event, and organizers expect thousands of families to participate.

Love Seed Mama Jump will headline Kids Fest this year. Love Seed is a six-piece rock band from Dewey Beach. With a reputation as one of the most energetic and engaging live shows on the East Coast, Love Seed has earned the title of The Official Rock Band of the Washington Redskins and plays at FedEx Field after every home Redskins game. The band has shared the stage with such notable acts as Dave Matthews, The Beach Boys, Beck, Matchbox 20 and Fuel and the B-52s.

“Kids Fest is going to be great this year,” said Leanne Silicato Prosser, organizer of the event. “We are excited to have Love Seed Mama Jump headlining this year; it will give it the vibe young families are looking for.”

Other performers include Sankofa Dancers and Drummers of Dover and a Mad Science stage performance that the kids are sure to enjoy. At noon, seasoned parachutist Sam Chick will freefall from 7,000 feet from an aircraft.

There will be plenty of action with moon bounces, rides, games and crafts to engage minds and bodies in a healthy outdoor experience. Abbott’s Mill is expected to bring an entertaining and educational display and Envirotech will provide Touch Tanks as well.

One of two large annual fundraising events for the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club, Kids Fest will generate annual operating support from individuals and businesses that will enable club staff to continue to provide quality program services to over 250 area youth. Programs are geared toward helping kids develop into productive, responsible and caring citizens. Funds raised by the event will be matched 100 percent by the Delaware Boys & Girls Club organization.

Celebrating five years in their new location this past January, the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club has increased its efforts to establish the Milford Club as a community center in the Greater Milford Area. In addition to serving school-aged children, it has recently expanded its facility and services to include a full-sized fitness center, adult basketball and pickleball leagues, and water aerobic classes. The Richard Y. Johnson Aquatic Center is also home to the Milford High School Buccaneers swim team, the club’s own Milford Marlins swim team and is the only Boys & Girls Club in Delaware to offer swimming scholarships through the Michael Phelps Foundation. These community services are made available to Greater Milford Area residents year-round through support from fundraising events including Kids Fest.

The event is open to participation by both nonprofit organizations and commercial vendors. Space is available, as are event sponsorships. For more information, contact the Greater Milford Boys & Girls Club at 302-422-4453. Admission to this year’s Kids Fest will be $5 for adults and free for kids.
