Bayhealth Sussex Campus Receives Several Design and Construction Awards

August 18, 2020

Bayhealth is pleased to announce several design and construction awards for the Bayhealth Hospital and Outpatient Center, Sussex Campus.

The American Institute of Architects - Baltimore Chapter awarded Bayhealth Sussex Campus its inaugural Exceptional Detail Award. The judges at the 2019 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Baltimore Excellence in Design Awards praised architect, CannonDesign, for creating a medical campus that supports healthy communities, healthy land development, and forward thinking healthcare. They said there is an “element of warmth and elegance in the design instead of a cold and sterile feeling like most healthcare environments.” The award focused on how the new hospital reflects its surroundings: the natural landscape of southern Delaware, particularly the coastal features. They called the wooden wave wall in the hospital lobby a “beautiful example of excellent millwork.”

Associated Builder and Contractor (ABC) Delaware selected contractor, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, for an “Excellence in Construction” award in the $100M & over category. The ABC Delaware Excellence in Construction Awards Program honors the “best of the best” in the construction industry. Sussex Campus contractor, Eastern Industrial Services, received a Merit Award for their contribution to the project. Eastern Industrial Services provided multi-craft services in support of Whiting-Turner such as thermal insulation, scaffolding, and coatings.

Bayhealth’s trade partner Battaglia Electric, Inc., received the Best Electrical Construction Award from General Builders Contract Association for its work on the Bayhealth Sussex Campus. Battaglia Electric worked with Whiting-Turner and CannonDesign to feed over a half mile of service feeder, fiber optic and control cables from an outdoor substation. The judges said their work helped to make the project more customizable and easier to layout and install.
