August 14, 2019

With only a few more weeks left until Labor Day 2019 and the end of the official summer season here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, be sure to take advantage of the warm temperatures while they’re still around. To help you, we’ve got a number of great events to tell you about for this coming weekend.

From Ocean City to Lewes and Georgetown and several other points along the coast, there’s a little something for everyone to do this weekend at and near the beaches.

Okay, let’s get right to it. Here are the Oldfather Group’s featured events for the weekend of August 16-18 at and near the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

2019 Poor Girls Open (August 15-17). Coming on the heels of the popular White Marlin Open, the three-day Poor Girls Open kicks off Thursday, August 15, in Ocean City.

The Poor Girls Open is a women’s only billfish release tournament that benefits breast cancer research. In addition to billfish, there are also categories for tuna and dolphin.

More than 100 boats are again expected to participate in this year’s event, which has continued to grow every year since its inception.

In addition to the main event, there will also be silent auctions, a 50/50 drawing, commemorative t-shirts for sale and plenty of other fun events designed to raise money for breast cancer research.

For more information on this year’s event, centered at the Bahia Marina on 22nd Street and the Bay, visit the event website here.

Bloomin’ Lewes (August 17). The 2019 Bloomin’ Lewes celebration is scheduled for this Saturday, August 17, in the “First Town in the First State.”

The event is marketed as a celebration of public gardens and art and is sponsored by Lewes in Bloom and Art in Bloom.

Seven gardens will be highlighted this year, with local plen air artists painting at six of the selected sites.
