FOUR QUICK TIPS TO GET YARDS READY FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND

Summer is just around the corner, and Memorial Day is the kickoff to the warmer weather we’ve all been waiting for. Memorial Day is a time to spend with friends and family and to pay respect to those who have served, not time to worry about the condition of your yard. With these four quick touch-up points, your outdoor area is sure to impress, and take the worry out of the holiday weekend.

  1. Manicure your lawn: To receive that beautiful lush green color everyone envies, take the time to fertilize your grass. Make sure you wait the appropriate 1-2 days after fertilizing to mow your lawn in order to let the fertilizer sink in. Watering your grass regularly will also help achieve a beautiful lawn. It is recommended that you only water 2-3 days a week for about 20 minutes or so. The best time to water is between 6-10 a.m. when your yard has a full day to dry. Finally, when mowing your lawn, do not mow too low, as this will put stress on the grass and make it more susceptible to weeds and drying out. We recommend mowing at a blade height of 3” and only cutting the top 1/3 of the grass for the best results.
  2. Clean outdoor space and furniture: Whether it is the first time breaking out the patio furniture from storage or if you have had it out all year, giving it a good once over with the pressure washer is a good idea. A pressure washer is an excellent way to protect your delicate furniture while getting rid of dirt and dust that may have accumulated. While you have your pressure washer out, tackle your driveway and patio surfaces as well to make sure they are grime free.
  3. Freshen up your garden and plants: Remove weeds to prevent spreading and give flowers and plants more room to grow. Then add a fresh layer of mulch to flower beds and garden areas for a quick and painless step to take your yard to the next level.
  4. Protect your patio from pests: Now that your lawn is in pristine condition, it is time to focus on the deck or patio. Spraying for bugs, such as pesky mosquitoes, on your grass, shrubs and landscaped areas will create a barrier insects will not want to cross. Now you can enjoy your outdoor space long into the evening. For an extra touch, consider adding a fire pit or outdoor lighting to illuminate those bug free nights.

Following these four quick lawn and outdoor clean-up tips will allow you to sit back and relax while your yard is the envy of your neighbors, family and friends. No matter what plans you have for this weekend, take time to relax and enjoy the kickoff to summer. And don’t forget to take time out of your weekend to remember and honor all of the service men and women. Thank you from all of us at Green Top Lawn and Landscaping
