United States Air Force Thunderbirds, Many Other Aircraft, to Fill the Skies over Ocean City this Weekend

August 12, 2020

If you’re craving the big annual events that normally make up the Summer and Fall seasons at the Delaware and Maryland beaches, we’ve got some good news for you this week!

While most of these popular annual gatherings are being postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s one big event and several other small events and happenings going on this weekend in the coastal region.

The big event is actually one of the headliners of the Summer, which was postponed from June and is taking place this Saturday and Sunday just over the state line in Maryland. And that’s the 2020 Ocean City Air Show!

Read more about this year’s festivities below so that you and your family can have a safe and fun-filled day at the beach this weekend.

But that’s not all we have to tell you about this week, though we do admit that today’s Oldfather Group “Weekender Blog” has us all a little bit jumpy. Kind of like we’re running around on the beach with kangaroos!

Now before you make any assumptions, we haven’t gone completely off our rocker. But you’ll just have to keep reading below to learn what exactly it is that we’re talking about.

Okay, on to this week’s events blog! We begin in Ocean City, where the skies will be filled this weekend with all kinds of new and high-tech aircraft.

Ocean City Air Show (August 15-16). The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will be headlining this year’s popular air show in Ocean City, now in it’s 13th year. The two-day event is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16, in Maryland’s most popular resort city.

Note that this event was rescheduled from earlier in the summer and there will still be social distancing, face mask requirements in some areas and other protocols in place for the 2020 air show. Click here to learn more on this year’s safety rules.

In addition to the Thunderbirds, other fighter jet demonstration teams from the United States Air Force will also be performing in Ocean City this weekend. This includes the F-22 Raptor, the F-35 Lighting II and the A-10 Thunderbolt II teams, all taking to the skies during different times over the weekend.

Due to the State of Maryland’s COVID-19 restrictions in regards to large public gatherings, tickets for all premium beach viewing are not being offered for 2020. Tickets are still available, however, for the VIP Penthouse and VIP Skybox locations.

Organizers are also planning a large livestream of the event, which will include several cameras and locations, interviews with pilots and unique angles of the event.

7th Annual Breast Fest 5K (August 15). Lace up your sneakers this weekend and take part in the 2020 Breast Fest 5K, always a fun local event that supports a great cause here at the Delaware beaches.

The run kicks off at North Beach Restaurant in Dewey Beach this Saturday, August 15, at 7:30 a.m., which registration beginning an hour earlier.

Due to the unique challenges facing the area this year, the race will have a few different elements and safety protocols in place. But they shouldn’t detract from the spirit and atmosphere of the day.

The most significant change is that so-called “wave starts” will be utilized for 2020 in order to provide for adequate social distancing. These will take place one minute apart until all runners are on the course.

Face masks are required for the registration process, but not for the actual race.

The Breast Fest 5K is in its seventh year and proceeds go to support The Tyanna Foundation and the Hoffberger Breast Center in Baltimore.

The cost to participate in this year’s event is $25. More information is available here.

Kangaroo Yoga (August 14-16). Okay, now it’s time to have a little fun with one of the newest and wildest ways to get in shape at the Delaware beaches.

Have you ever tried Kangaroo Yoga? No, not jumping around like kangaroos and burning as many calories as you can, but doing actual yoga WITH REAL KANGAROOS?
