Variety of Christmas Themed Events Spread Throughout the Coastal Region on the First Weekend of December

December 2, 2020

Christmas events dominate the calendar again this week, as they likely will through the big day on December 25. And that’s how it should be this time of year, right?

With everything that’s planned for the month of December, we hope to end a challenging 2020 in a positive way here in the coastal regions of both Delaware and Maryland.

One note before we tell you about this weekend’s featured events, however. We completed a big writeup earlier on the three days of activities planned for this weekend at the Children’s Beach House in Lewes, an event that unfortunately had to be canceled at the last minute due to the new COVID-19 related health protocols in Delaware.

While these events sadly won’t be happening for 2020, this fantastic local charity does a lot for the community and still needs funds to continue its range of programs heading into 2021. We encourage everyone to support the Children’s Beach House, or the charity of their choice, this holiday season.

There are so many worthwhile charities in the coastal region and they could all use our help during these unpredictable times. Please do what you can.

Okay, on to what’s going on this weekend at and near the beaches. We kick things on in the “First Town in the First State” of Lewes and an inaugural event that’s sure to be a hit with everyone in the family:

Lewes Lights Opening Ceremony (December 4). Billed by organizers as a true “Clark Griswold” style event in coastal Delaware, the kickoff of the inaugural Lewes Lights is planned for this Friday, December 4, at 5:30 p.m.

The event is being held on Sussex Drive in Lewes and includes an entire residential neighborhood of homes completely decked out for the Christmas season. The concept was created by local residents Christian Mullins and Debra Evalds in order to bring some joy to the community at the end of what’s been a very challenging year.

The opening ceremony will feature distinguished guests from Lewes, Sussex County and the State of Delaware, as well as everyone’s favorite person this time of year – Santa Claus himself!

Attendees to the event will be asked to remain in their vehicles for the ceremony, with a local radio station providing access to the speeches and the countdown to the official lighting.

Millsboro Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting (December 5). The town of Millsboro is bucking the trend this year and moving forward with its 2020 Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting, planned for Saturday, December 5, beginning at 5 p.m.

The parade is scheduled first, with the tree lighting and Christmas caroling at Town Hall immediately following.

Millsboro decided to move ahead with the parade this year, despite most similar events being canceled, after their plan was approved by the Delaware Division of Public Health. Proper signage and hand sanitizer will both be on display, per the accepted guidelines.

While the parade and tree lighting are moving forward as scheduled, there will be no bonfire this year and the Santa House will not make an appearance for 2020. But organizers do promise that Santa is coming to town for a short visit, in order to be a part of the parade.

Elvis Is In The Building! (December 3-6). Pay homage to the King of Rock & Roll this weekend as The Movies at Midway celebrates the 50th anniversary of the film “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is.”

The documentary recalls the King’s return to the concert stage in 1970, after nearly 10 years absent from touring. Those concerts broke all box office records at the time and breathed new life into the career of Elvis Presley.

“Elvis: That’s The Way It Is” features performances of many of the King’s greatest hits, including “Love Me Tender,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Heartbreak Hotel” and more.

Showings are scheduled for Thursday and Saturday at 7 p.m., as well as Friday and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Tickets for all for showings are available for purchase at www.moviesatmidway.com.
