‘Been Here Stay Here’ Tangier Island film to open Sept. 5

August 27, 2025

“Been Here Stay Here,” a quietly powerful, observational documentary about life on Tangier Island, Va., will open Friday, Sept. 5, for a one-week run at the Movies at Midway, Rehoboth Beach.

Set in a centuries-old Christian fishing community deep in the Chesapeake Bay, the film gives an immersive portrait of a place many know but few truly understand. There are no experts, interviews, or voiceovers — just the rhythms of daily life: crabbing, church services, front-porch conversations and family dinners.

“This is the kind of film we almost never see anymore,” said David Usui, director. “No stats, no narration. Just life unfolding.”

“Been Here Stay Here” could be considered a love letter to the Chesapeake, honoring its history, its people and its enduring spirit.

The film premiered to critical acclaim at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and has made waves at major U.S. festivals.
