‘Listening from the Spiritual Heart 'is topic at St. Peter's Aug. 25
The Rev. Tilden Edwards, an Episcopal priest and the founder and senior fellow of the ecumenical Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington, D.C., will speak on the spiritual heart in the face of current crises in the next presentation in the Summer Spirituality Series at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lewes, Thursday, Aug. 25. The presentation will be in the parish hall, 211 Mulberry St., at 7 p.m.
A social time with the speaker will follow with ice cream.
The title of Edwards’ presentation will be “Listening from the Spiritual Heart: What Does That Do to Our Understanding and Response to the Social and Political Crises of the Past Year?”
“After I provide a spiritual framework for looking at the major social and political crises of our time, we will move into a contemplative meditation that helps to see these crises and our response to them from the open, compassionate wisdom of the spiritual heart, rather than only from our mind’s linear thinking and our ego’s fearful self-centeredness,” he said.
“There will be time for shared reflection on how we can constructively respond to these shock waves of our time from the deepest place in us, where we are closest to God’s guiding and liberating spirit.”
Edwards is the author of eight books, among them “Spiritual Director, Spiritual Companion,” “Living in The Presence,” and “Embracing the Call to Spiritual Depth,” that offer contemplatively grounded understanding and many practices for those who seek to deepen their life in God.
Shalem’s roots go back to 1973, when, as the head of an ecumenical center in Washington, D.C., Edwards began to meet with a group of people who desired to deepen their relationship with God through contemplative awareness.
Out of this small group, Shalem has evolved into a major center for teaching contemplative practices and preparing spiritual leaders of groups and retreats, with more than 1,500 spiritual directors and group leader graduates around the world.
